After a 16-foot-high section of a rubber-bladder dam suddenly burst, draining Tempe Town Lake in 2010, the City of Tempe initiated a search for a safe, reliable, cost-effective, and durable replacement that would still allow the recreational Tempe Town Lake to make a controlled transition into a river during major water flow events on the Salt River project water-delivery system. The newly constructed $45 million Tempe Town Lake Downstream Dam is one of the country’s largest hydraulically operated steel gate dams. The project received the American Society of Civil Engineers (Phoenix branch) Project of the Year Award in the $10 million plus category.
