The SFMTA Central Subway project involves constructing a new subterranean light-rail line from a surface station adjacent to the Caltrain commuter rail depot at 4th and King Streets to Chinatown, with stops in South of Market and Union Square. Phase 2 consists of the construction of four new stations using the SME construction method built along the 1.7-mile Central Subway project alignment through one the most densely populated neighborhoods in the United States. This $1.5 billion project, funded by the FTA and by other municipal and federal agencies, will improve public transportation in San Francisco’s Downtown Business District.
