PMA is celebrating our 15th anniversary working with New Jersey’s Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G), a multibillion-dollar gas and electric generation and distribution company headquartered in Newark.

PMA’s first assignment arose from a 2007 system-wide upgrade to meet additional demand with increased capacity and improved reliability within the transmission and distribution grid. At that time, PSE&G plans showed that an increase in electrical delivery capital-specific projects alone would grow from $131 million to more than $1 billion in 2017. To respond to this projected increase, senior leadership created the Project Management Organization, as well as a distinct projects controls team to facilitate scope, schedule, and budget adherence.

PMA performed an organizational assessment comparing existing PSE&G project controls procedures to industry best practices. The team, led by Executive Director Bruce Stephan, spent 6 weeks at PSE&G facilities interviewing more than 75 staff members in key organizational areas. PMA organized our resulting 176-page report following the Project Management Institute Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) areas and a Carnegie Mellon ranking system. At PSE&G’s request, PMA also developed a scorecard that ranked performance in 44 key project management functions in the PMBOK.

After the success of our study, PMA was awarded an additional assignment to implement our recommendations. Our team helped PSE&G establish a Project Controls Office with best practice processes and state-of-the-art systems to maximize on-time and on-budget completion. This work involved cutting-edge integration of SAP’s XRPM module for schedule management with Primavera P6 and reporting dashboards. As a result of our earlier efforts, PMA now serves as the PSE&G consultant of choice for project planning and oversight, project controls, budget management, cost control, workforce development, PMIS, and program governance for their construction capital program.

Currently, Program Director Salvador Agosto manages a team of 20+ PMA employees who lead scheduling, reporting, cost management, and business application development functions for a $1 billion PSE&G capital project portfolio in South Plainfield and Newark. The implementation includes the setup of an enterprise scheduling environment and the creation and maintenance of approximately 450 projects.

PMA provides project controls scheduling services to assist with project planning, project scheduling, and project administration. Cost engineering services include project planning, project administration, and forecasting. PMA staff also augment the PSE&G IT Group in providing automated reporting tools for upper management and various stakeholder groups. Finally, PMA provides P6 training and guidance to project stakeholders, schedulers, and project controls engineers.

“Our long-standing relationship with PSE&G is a testament to our commitment to being trusted advisors to our clients,” said Salvador Agosto, “and we look forward to continuing our success supporting PSE&G’s portfolio of projects.”

PMA Consultants is proud of our 15-year collaboration with PSE&G to help maintain its tradition of safe, reliable service, and we look forward to many more years of servicing this continuous and productive partnership.
